What type of slugs would you recommend that are safe to shoot out of my 870 express. It has the stock smooth bore barrel. New to slugs so any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Just about any sabot type will work very well and not do anything to your barrel. All are a priced a little higher than standard "rifled" slugs. Hornady has started loading the big bore bullets (.45 I think) that they use in their Leverevolution ammo. Link to Hornady. These are supposed to be awesome ballistically and hit like a ton of bricks. I should think these would be suited more to long range and to hunting.

The standard Brenneke style rifled slugs ( 3/4 oz and 1 oz) that most manufacturers put up are very effective for "social purposes" out to 50 yards or so. They are also relatively inexpensive. I have used Federal, Remington and even Wolf. The Wolf rifled slug is super inexpensive and is a good load to learn with. I've got ten 5 round boxes of them in the ammo locker right now. The lead is fairly soft and won't hurt your barrel long term.

thanks big dog. the hornady link you posted is very interesting though it looks like those are intended for rifled shotgun barrels. I picked up 5 boxes of 2 3/4 winchester hollow point rifled slugs from wally world for $3.12/box. I'll start there. Ive also ordered some big 3" rifled slugs from midway for my chiropractic adjustments.
